Lunes 8 de septiembre de 2025

In response to the increasing demand for professionals in the healthcare field, especially in regions, the PUCV will offer the Chemistry and Pharmacy Program starting 2026. This program is an addition to the 65 undergraduate programs offered, Kinesiology and Medical Technology among them, which are the basis of the upcoming Health Department, which also includes the Medicine project.

Chemistry and Pharmacy will be taught at the Chemistry Institute of the Science Department at the Curauma Campus, which is implemented with modern laboratories, state-of-the-art research equipment and scholars that designed a study plan with an integral approach on sustainability, green chemistry and applied research.

“The development of pharmaceutical products must be respectful with the environment. Our students will learn to create friendlier solutions, less toxic and aligned with green chemistry, reducing environmental contamination and promoting sustainability as an essential principle of the profession”, Patricio Baeza, Director of the Chemistry Institute, stated.

Research areas and initial practical training

The institute develops projects in biochemistry, computer chemistry, materials chemistry, environmental chemistry and chemistry education, critical areas for the development of the industry and therefore, a priority for the training of future professionals.

The Chemistry and Pharmacy program will provide a complete training, that will allow its graduates to design and formulate high-quality medications and cosmetics that are safe for human use, and manage pharmaceutical processes in pharmacies, hospitals, industries and Distribution centers.

Likewise, as part of the university’s vision, the program seeks that students contribute to health public policies, promoting equality and safe access to medications, as well as leading interdisciplinary teams committed to collective good.

“We want our graduates to be real agents of change, capable of transforming the industry, propel scientific research and directly contribute to people’s health and wellbeing. We seek to train professionals with deep social and environmental awareness, committed to equality, sustainability and the ethical development of their discipline. This program is born with this vocation, to respond to the challenges of today”, Baeza emphasized.

Academic Vicerector Claudia Mejías, highlighted that “in this health field scientific program, we show the distinctive signature of our university through a community and experimental approach throughout the courses included in the curriculum. Therefore, together with a solid education on basic sciences, there is a unwavering commitment to the integral education of students, incorporating bioethical aspects and the humanization of health in a community context”.

The authority stressed that, in agreement with the values of the PUCV, “the structure of the Chemistry and Pharmacy program promotes people-oriented care, respect for human dignity, equality in health access and informed and ethically- based decision-making”.
